One of the most common questions we receive from customers is whether they should turn off their LED wall when not in use. Many businesses, especially exhibition halls, have the habit of powering down their LED walls at the end of each day. But is this the best practice for longevity? Or could frequent power cycling cause more harm than leaving the screen on but in standby mode? To answer this, we consulted our engineer, Sam.

Customer: “We know LED video walls are designed for 24/7 operation. If we leave them on, will it have any negative effects?”

Sam: “It depends on how long the screen remains unused between sessions. For indoor screens, turning them off occasionally doesn’t make a huge difference, except for potential wear on the power supplies.”

Customer: “I’m new to the industry, but we typically don’t power off the LED wall. Instead, we switch it to black mode when it’s used regularly.”

“For example, when we install LED walls for clients who use them during the day but not at night (such as in exhibitions), we advise them to put the display into standby mode overnight. However, if the wall won’t be used for an extended period, we recommend shutting it down.”

Sam: “It also depends on the size of the wall, frequency of use, and the specific product. Even in standby mode, LED walls consume some power. Checking the data sheet will show how much power is used in standby.”

“Another consideration is that some LED walls lose their settings when powered off. If your processor has this issue, it may be a reason to keep the wall on.”

Outdoor LED Walls: A Different Approach

Customer: “We have an outdoor LED video wall, and I prefer to leave it on. I don’t even black it out at night—I display a test pattern overnight. This way, I can quickly check in the morning if everything is working. If there’s an issue, I can fix it immediately rather than dealing with setup delays.”

Sam: “That’s a good practice, especially for outdoor LED walls. Keeping the screen on at 0.5%–1% brightness prevents condensation-related issues by maintaining heat within the panels. It also ensures uniform wear across the RGB LEDs, preventing color imbalances over time.”

“If using a test pattern, keep in mind that it may focus on certain LEDs more than others, which could lead to uneven aging. A dimmed white screen (e.g., R: 255, G: 255, B: 255) distributes the load evenly, preventing burn-in and maintaining color balance.”
